It's February and the Tea's Great!
Warm greetings to you from Modern Steep this February. We have just a few updates and a special offer to share with you this month as we make our way past the darker days of winter toward the season of love and sharing.
And, the Winners Are...
We have always been proud of the relationship we have with our tea growers in Nepal. Now, we’re extremely proud to announce that both the Kumari Gold and White Prakash teas made by these fine folks recently won big during the 2020 Toronto Tea Festival preconference tea tasting competition. Kumari Gold took first prize in the black tea category while White Prakash placed second in the white tea category. Teas were rated by members of the public as well as tea sommeliers in the blind competition. While the results of the competition are great, frankly, we always knew these were winners!
Speaking of our friends in Nepal, we're excited to share with you our plans to travel to their high mountain tea gardens this summer as we work on a series of mini-documentaries about the great work they’re doing. We’ll be accompanied by Alan Sylvestre Media of Emmaus, Pennsylvania as we work to share with you how your purchase of these teas directly contributes to improving the quality of life for the farmers and their families – from food to education to shelter and beyond. The videos will also be shared with these hard-working families to help them spread the word about their commitment to organic farming, cooperative living and the art of fine tea making. We look forward to sharing more with you in the coming months as the project moves forward.
Back on the Menu
After a brief hiatus, we’re excited to have our Cocoa Matè back on the menu with a slightly updated recipe. The biggest change is in regard to the source of cacao nibs for this chocolate-lover’s dreamy concoction. Specifically, we’re proud to mention that the nibs are coming from North America’s first organic, fair-trade certified chocolate maker, Theo Chocolate, based in Seattle. Cheers to that!
Tea Update: Chota Tingrai Assam
Here’s the latest on our current outage of Chota Tingrai Assam…. When we bring on a new tea, we never know exactly what to expect in terms of its reception by our customers. In the case of this particular black tea we introduced in the fall, we underestimated the demand (perhaps a bittersweet experience). Normally, that could’ve been dealt with easily (you know, get more!). However, we were not anticipating what has been a peaceful protest going on in the region that has impacted amongst other things, transit. We’re not 100% sure when we will get this tea back on our menu and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. In the meantime, we’ll try to keep you updated on our progress and appreciate your patience. Fortunately, we have plenty of our ever-popular Assam hailing from the Sewpur Estate to keep you in good supply.
Peace, Love & Happiness (A.K.A. Free Tea!)
During the month of February, many will celebrate love with gifts of chocolate, jewelry, champagne, and “sweethearts” candy. While those are great, we invite you to let us send the gift of healthful and delicious tea to the one(s) you love!
To qualify, the order must be shipped to someone other than yourself by entering the name and address of that someone special into the “shipping address” field during checkout. And, be sure to include a little note for the recipient using the “order comments” field. Together, we’ll share in spreading our message of Peace, Love and Tea!
What's Next at Modern Steep?
We spent a considerable amount of time over the past couple of months tasting a number of new teas for potential future inclusion on our menu. We look forward to announcing in our March newsletter the arrival of at least two new exceptional pure leaf green teas. Stay tuned! And, if there’s ever a unique pure leaf tea or blend idea you’d like us to consider adding, please feel free to send those ideas our way and we’ll take a look, or better yet, a taste to see what we can do.
TeaFest PDX 2020
We are pleased to announce that we’ve secured another great spot at TeaFest PDX for 2020. This much adored regional tea festival launched just over three years ago with grand success as a venue for tea lovers of all sorts. Amongst a vast array of tea and accessories, patrons can enjoy live music, mini-tea house experiences, open-air and indoor venues, as well as educational offerings. Mark your calendars now to attend this splendid event, Saturday, July 18, 2020, World Forestry Center, Portland, Oregon.
May you enjoy a beautiful month filled with expressions of love and kindness. Thank you for reading along and for your loyalty to our independent, small business.
