Pure Madness… Our Best Matcha Prices in 15 Years!

Since 2015, we’ve welcomed the month of March with one big, happy tea-drinking smile. Why? It’s March Matcha Madness at Modern Steep. And, this year, the smile is bigger than ever as we offer the best prices on matcha in our 15 year history.

So what’s the big deal about matcha?

Matcha is widely considered to be the most unique and nutritious tea on the planet. Simply put, mat-cha means ground tea. Instead of traditionally steeping the leaf, the finely ground matcha powder is whisked into an intense frothy liquor often referred to as the "espresso of tea." It’s creamy, fragrant and potent.

When enjoying traditionally steeped tea, only about 30% of the leaf’s well documented healthful benefits are water soluble and therefore revealed in the cup. However, when consuming matcha, you’re actually ingesting finely ground-up tea leaves and therefore reap the full benefits of the leaf.

Our “ceremonial grade” matcha is made using organic leaf grown on a single-estate in Kagoshima using the Saemidori cultivar. The classification of “ceremonial grade” comes from the premium quality historically associated with use of matcha in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. In other words, this is the good stuff. The really good stuff.

While any tea leaf can be ground up into a power, our matcha is produced using time honored traditional methods and premium quality tea leaves. Prior to harvesting the leaves, the tea plants are shaded for about three weeks in order to increase nutritional properties while sweetening and/or mellowing the taste. This laborious process increases quality and taste.

Once harvested, the leaf is steamed, cooled, dried and cut to make it into a tea format known as tencha. Our tea maker then ages the dried tencha for several months in cool storage to further enrich the leaf while helping to mellow its taste (becoming even less astringent). Finally, the tencha is slowly ground into a fine talc-like powder for consumption as matcha. It is then packaged specifically for us on site in Japan.

Like most things, not all matcha is created equal. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that there are myriad matcha products on the U.S. market these days with many of those products containing fillers, thickeners and/or sugar. In fact, it’s no secret that the “matcha” at one international coffee chain contains 80% sugar. (We hope there’s actually some real tea in the remaining 20% of their formula!)

Call us purists, but we prefer to stick to 100% premium Japanese tea that’s shade-grown, organic, and meticulously transformed into pure and healthy matcha.

From a practical standpoint, matcha is often used to boost metabolism, awaken the mind and uplift mood. Frankly speaking, matcha is as much about how it makes you feel as it is about its rich, vibrant, delicious flavor.

When Tea Prices Go Down

From time to time you may have noticed we’ve lowered prices, sometimes dramatically, on some of our teas. How is that possible? Sometimes it has to do with increased demand which translates into economy of scale: we buy more, we get a better price. And, sometimes we simply find better prices on individual ingredients for our custom blended teas.

Most recently, we lowered the price on our Guava White tea blend given its growth in popularity and new ingredient sourcing in play, As such, we’re happy to pass the savings on to you, making this delicately tropical, antioxidant-rich white tea blend even more accessible. And in similarly good news, we expect to notify you of more price reductions in the near future.
