With autumn in the air and thinking about sharing meals with friends and loved ones, we can’t help but focus on one of the most savory and delicious teas on our menu – Gen Mai Cha (Brown Rice Tea). Originally created to help make tea more affordable by using toasted rice as a filler, gen mai cha is often made using a lower grade of Japanese green tea called Bancha as the base. The leaves are then blended with rice (gen mai) that has been soaked in water, steamed, dried and roasted. The resulting tea is a bit more savory than pure leaf green teas and yields a somewhat sweet nutty taste.
All that said, our Gen Mai Cha is not made with Bancha. Instead, we source high grade first flush Sencha as the base. This superior quality base brews up a cup that exhibits remarkable freshness over most ordinary Gen Mai teas on the market. It stands great alone when craving a hearty, robust cup of green tea and pairs exceptionally well with savory dishes at any time. We invite you to taste a bit of the extraordinary the next time you’re looking for a perfect pairing to go with that perfect meal. ‘Teas the season.
New Brewing Tools (aka Great Gifts!)
We are always on the lookout for convenient ways to brew up loose leaf tea. Taking into consideration durability, effectiveness and even good looks, we are excited to add a couple new brewing tools to our collection.
The Hook Handle Infuser is just the right size for steeping in your favorite mug or cup. Simply “hook” the tab over the edge of your cup, add tea and water, then remove to store on its own little ceramic dish until you’re ready for a second infusion. Check out our low price!
For added versatility, try steeping your tea in the 16 oz Tea Press by ForLife Designs. This durable press works great for steeping any type of tea from the finest rooibos leaf to large format white tea leaves. And, if you must, it also works great as a French Press for making coffee. When brewing tea in the press, be sure to make just enough to fill your cup as you want to empty the press after each infusion to prevent over-steeping. For an 8, 12 or 16 ounce cup, this tool couldn’t be more simple to use and easy to clean afterward. Save big over MSRP!
Tea Menu Update
With a fresh batch of high grade Bai Mudan back in supply, we are excited to announce that our beloved Blue Hawaii custom tea blend will be once again available starting November 21st. Thanks for your patience while we waited this out!
In just a few days many Americans will push the pause button for a day to reflect on the joys, blessings, and relative peace we enjoy. For some, these can be overshadowed by challenges faced, be they devastating fires, political divides, illness or other hardships. As such, this can be a wonderful opportunity to offer a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on, or simply something warm to drink.
It is in the spirit of Thanksgiving that we at Modern Steep wish to offer our gratitude to you, our faithful readers and tea fans. Thank you for being part of our own journey and for sharing our love of one of this world’s most healthful and versatile natural beverages, tea. For the many friendships we have developed with so many of our customers and wholesalers, we are humbled and grateful.
May you and yours enjoy a wonderful celebration this holiday season. And if the hustle and bustle of the holiday season feels like a bit much at times, remember this… Keep Calm. Drink Tea.
